Wow! What kind of slow-ass lines do you people in Australia have to suffer with?

    Thats ridiculously slow. :(

Dial-up. I can't get any form of high-speed internet because my building is so old the phone lines are dodgy, I'm renting so any sort of drilling to get cable is out and wireless broadband is either not here or too expensive.

And I'm in the 10th largest city in the country. My parents, who live in a little country town a long way from anywhere get quite decent broadband speeds. Go figure...

Yes, if you assume the (9+3) is a power.

No, if you assume there is a fantom multiplier between the 2 and the (9+3).

It's a loaded question, due to incomplete specifications, yet again.

Takes me back to my User days. Kill them all!!!

It's cut and dry simple math that you are over thinking. Why would you assume (9+3) is a power? 9+3=12 simple as that.

Would make sense. Intel's x86 chips serve many masters, most of them not Apple. None of them are optimized for X, let alone iOS. Most of them at the high end are designed for servers and the like, not tablets and laptops. Apple would rather see that precious silicon - and the power it consumes - reserved for things they find important. Not for what Steve Ballmer thinks is important. Or some HP server boffin.

In contrast, Apple designs their own ARM chips now, getting exactly what they want.

I could see this happening. Apple switches their whole product lineup to ARM chips that it designs in house . . .

And that it has Intel manufacture, since Intel is the best fab operation in the world.

iPod video device, maybe movie service and maybe streaming device.

    That's it. :)

I'm really tired of the common 'wisdom' that looks at current phone-only numbers (dominated by Android 2-fers) and declare the inevitable, eternal dominance of Android, particularly in light of articles like this...
    http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/4/Apple_iOS_Platform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S

That's 59% iOS over Android when you count the whole platform. (That's 59% MORE, not 59 apple, 41% android).
That's a single iOS ecosystem that includes THE platform of the future (the only 'finished' tablet currently available), compared to an Android environment that's fragmented even in phones, and completely disjointed with its beta (of course) tablet platform (fresh out of the oven, no muss, no testing.)

Just as the media pumps up the underdog in a political race to sell more ad minutes (no one wants a boring horse race), Apple MUST be taken down a notch if there are going to be page hits.

My money is where it counts... on AAPL.

Bogus story because Apple would never fit graphics cards capable of outputting at that res in the iMacs or laptops. Plus I don't think any single monitor can have that resolution that you can buy today?

They currently do... even the Airs can do 1440x700 plus a 2560x1440 Cinema Display. And the 15" MBP and up and all the iMacs have pretty good video cards. You're wrong.

    Retina Cinema in Summer?

I'm hoping for a new Cinema too, but the DPI on them is as high as it's ever going to get, IMO. There's no need for a higher pixel density on a screen that you see from that distance. The screens in them are already very dense. They're equivalent to the Dell Ultra Sharp, which are over $1000.

The resolution will not be updated, but hopefully the Cinemas will get dual Thunderbolt ports and maybe USB 3.0 and audio through Thunderbolt.

Simple...it's NOT gonna happen anytime soon.

The Tablet market is a sad failure, as it represents a tech in search of a purpose...nobody needs or wants it.

Hint? Think Origami, one among too many MS failures...just like the Zune in the next months.

Apple will NOT enter the fabled Tablet market again, as the focus of demand is on notebooks, nothing else...yet another borndead rumor.

Lol. I totally forgot about the origami. What a flop!

I was excited about this at first but... this just seems like an incredibly stupid fad. Instead of spending time to put the music on my PMP, I sync to the digital cloud, then stream the music to said player. Yeah, in an era where unlimited data is becoming more not less scarce, that's just what I need, data surcharges. This just appears to be yet another fad intending to push consumer technology in the wrong direction.

Nothing is stopping RIM from paying MORE than Apple to secure supply for their product.

    Its simple supply and demand.

There is a limited supply and massive demand.
What does that do to price?

Not quite but close. You almost repeated what I wrote. Any company can pay more for the piece parts but then you price yourself out of the market. Look at how well that served the Xoom.

But what I am saying is this is not a monopoly power in play but a monopsony. They are really different dynamics in how they are controlled and play out.

Just seeing soooooo many people 'painfully' waiting for the Merom MBP, i think we should start a Merom MBP club as soon as we start receiving them!

Btw, how many days does it take for the new MBPs to arrive in the Apple showrooms from the time they are announced?

Not really significantly faster than the G5 Quad. Maybe 50% faster at best. As owner of a Quad G5 my motivation would be more about the 6 bays and the FW 800 and extra USB 2 port on the front than the speed. :) Not worth the extra money to go 3GHz - 33% more money for 12% more speed doesn't make economic sense. Need 8 cores inside.

iOS uses services from a company called Skyhook to help with location tracking. they use GPS and wifi access points to pinpoint locations faster than GPS.

Apple stopped using Skyhook a while back, I think around v3.2 or something. Let me check. Yes, that was when Apple changed (http://techcrunch.com/2010/07/29/apple-location/) to using their own WiFi and cell databases.

Agreed. Google's darling Android doesn't just track cell towers. They've found it recording wi-fi networks near the user as well and transmitting that data... like every couple of minutes.

See above. Apple does something very similar. Whenever an app requests a location using GPS, the phone also scans for nearby cell towers and WiFi hotspots. That info is sent up to Apple to build their database.

Why does Google need to know this?

Same reason as Apple. While on this topic, let's hit the wayback machine:

Before the iPhone came out, Google was secretly collecting cell location info via any phone with GPS and Google Maps. Mostly Windows Mobile phones, I would think.

Good thing, too, because the iPhone debuted without GPS and was pretty much useless in that respect. Then Google unveiled a version of Google Maps using their cell location database, and suddenly the iPhone and other phones without GPS reception were useful after all.

Yet I use Google every day, but I at least know they're watching me.

Yet you didn't know Apple was. Ignorance is bliss.

Except that neither cares about watching YOU. They're watching for cells and hotspots. Sorry, they're more important :)

Ok, here's the information that's actually known about the consolidated.db file:
    1) It records the locations of nearby wi-fi access points and cell towers.
    2) When location services were originally added to the iPhone, the file had a different name and was stored in a different location. (It was moved as part of the multi-tasking updates.)
    3) The purpose of the file has been explicitly spelled out by Apple *from the beginning*. It is used *by* location services to calculate your current position in order to be able to display your position faster than would be possible solely using GPS. (It's part of the Assisted GPS process.)
    4) There is absolutely no evidence that the file's contents are ever transmitted to anyone. It exists on the iPhone, and in the backup(s) of said iPhone.

That's almost all correct (*). It's just a receive-only cache to speed up locating and use less battery and network resources.

(*) WiFi and cell are not part of A-GPS. The A in A-GPS on the iPhone is about receiving satellite information from an assistance server on the 'net.
