Why? Thunderbolt is essentially an external PCI-E port.
But, why should one have to buy a ThunderPort to eSATA hub and a ThunderPort to USB 3.0 hub and clutter my desk and waste two of my precious daisy-chain positions just to have some ports that are common in un-Apple systems?
ThunderPort is cool, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be useful to simply build in common ports.

From what I can tell Merom is just a Conroe that can operate at a lower TDP. They're all just fabricated off the same piece of silicon. (Someone posted an image on this.)
That's right. Even Woodcrest is part of the same family. They're just designed and engineered for different purposes (mobile, desktop, server).
What's missing to me is the uniform marketing scheme to help sell potential customers. Intel has Centrino Duo currently, presumably Centrino 2 Duo (terrible name, in my opinion) for Merom, Core 2 Duo/Extreme (equally terrible) for Conroe, but I haven't heard anything for Woodcrest. Xeon Duo? Xeon Core 2? I have no idea.
The point is that they all have a lot in common, but it's easy to get confused, and Intel isn't really helping at this point. Where are the marketing people to get it right? At least Apple's scheme is somewhat better--Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro--more clearly defined segmentation in my opinion.

They're not. You're seriously whining about "taking so long" when the first announcements came *earlier today*? Really? A "delay" of HOURS is something shareholders are going to freak out over???
Why don't you read the rest of my statement, fanboy?
If Apple announces that the new Merom laptops are available and are ready to ship that day, then it isn't a big deal.

I hope this eventually leads to Sound Blaster support for macs.
I hope not. We've been down that...well, it wasn't even a road...it was a road construction project.
Creative created a Fourpoint card, priced it like the DD5.1 card, and didn't work on the drivers past the initial release at a time when Mac OS X was becoming important, so it was never Mac OS X-compatible or reasonably good.
As far as the patent debates went, the filing system and visual access were patents that seemed all too generic.

I posted this on the mini specs forum, but thought it would be needed here as well.
Are they already shipping then?

So, the video streaming to TV device... how likely do you all think it is that they'll let you stream your own video through it? If I could stream my totally legally sourced DivX movies (ahem) through it that would be awesome beyond words!

Even if Apple makes a crappy phone, I will probably want this thing. Mainly because I am certain that Apple will make this compatible with iLife, address book, iTunes, etc.
It will be so nice to finally have a phone that can easily connect to my mac and work seemlessly with my existing address book. music, photos, safari faves, maps, etc.
I am so sick of editing syncing, tricking, teasing, and spending hours of wasted time to get data into my phone.

Sure, your entire post just screams at what a safe driver you are. :rolleyes:I bet if your parents saw a post like this they would take away your car. You are a menace.
See above. A parent was in the car and actively encouraged me to cut the idiot off. My family's general philosophy (in regards to driving) is be aggressive and intimidate people who try to screw with you; it always results in you winning (it also helps when your uncle presides over the traffic court in town).

One thing I noted on the old page 2 thread was the possibility of a REAL Photo iPod - more like my Epson P-4000. It could double as a video player for the new "higher res" iTunes video downloads.
But back to the photo crowd. Wouldn't it be sweet to have a larger Photo iPod that was integrated into Aperture ...
1. High speed internal CF and SD card inputs in this larger case
2. Full support for RAW and RAW zooming
3. Under a pound / 450 g in weight
4. Large, bright 640 x 480 screen
5. Killer feature: Aperture keyword / ranking / stacking functions on the iPod!!
You're on the road shooting, and traveling light. During breaks you upload your CF/SD cards to the new "Aperture.iPod". When you're sitting in a cafe, back at your hotel, or taking a train home you whip out the Aperture.iPod and using the Keywords.plist you uploaded from Aperture before you left you start Stacking, key-wording, and ranking images.
Next day you head to your studio, upload the new images from the Aperture.iPod to your MP 3Ghz (w/16 GB RAM and 3 TB of HDs!), and the first pass of your sorting is already done!
Aperture is SUPPOSED to be about meshing cool software with Apple hardware to make the professional (and dedicated amateur) photographer's life easier. I'm 99% sure this press conference will be about how Aperture and Apple hardware let's you focus on creative shooting, not IT issues.

So no one would have been able to shoot the 19 people who were shot (and 20 injured) in Tucson? Perhaps not the first one or two or even three, but eventually someone would have been able pull out their gun and take out the guy before he got to 5 let alone 19 or 20.
It happens quite often when there are people with CC permits around, it just isn't reported as often as the nut job - who already was a criminal - pulls out a gun and kills innocents.
It might have just happened here too - the who knows where three armed robbers were headed next. They found the 2 in a residential area and closed schools near there.
And for the people wondering, Chula Vista isn't a very nice area and I'm not surprised that guards who are guarding the area (it is not a completely inside mall if memory serves) were carrying guns at night.
Yes if five people in the area all pulled out loaded weapons and started shooting, they all would have hit the killer and no one else.
No one could prevent what happened simply by carrying a gun. He intended to kill and struck without warning.
What actually happens successfully is that criminals who do not intend to kill but threaten get thwarted. Actual killers or criminals who do not care about taking a life in the process are not actually stopped that often. It is a fantasy story concocted by wanna be heros.
Look I am not arguing to take your gun away. I want to keep my gun too. But don't tell me these fantasy stories about how we'll all save the day with our concealed weapon. And don't tell me the story about the big bad liberal who wants to take our guns away either. Its just a wedge issue.

Yes it is a deal breaker. I actually spend quite a bit of time in bed after lights out surfing and reading, keeping up with stuff (I am doing it at this moment) with the brightness at the lowest level +1 to not disturb my wife, and its definitely not enough to see the keyboard.
I also like it for taking notes in a dark presentation room. I got the newer air and returned it after a week (and gladly paid the restocking fee) because of this alone. I really liked the reduced weight and bulk, didnt miss the optical drive, but I gotta have that keyboard backlit.
right now I tend to use the ipad when I am just reading, but when I have to type it gets awkward, so I break out a laptop.
I use mine in dimly lit rooms too, but have not problems because I can type. It's a fantastic machine and not to get one because the keys don't glow in the dark is just plain stupid.

HDMI wireless coupled with a wireless iPod/Tablet that allows you to see your controls would be a must for many Mac fans.
It would make a lot of sense if Apple isn't going to do a Mac Pro Mini to do a HDMI wireless instead. And because your Mac is likely to be in another room (target audience being the iMac) they need a wireless (non-line of sight) remote, so either an iPod or a new device.

Ultimately: who cares?
Bono still sucks, U2 has always sucked, and, much as i like a) the color of the new iPod and b) fighting AIDS, Apple's weird extended relationship with Bono makes very little sense to me.
P.S. Damn, Bono sucks.
Yes, I'm sure you came to that conclusion after spending countless hours with the man, learning about him, talking with him, and generally getting to know him on a human-to-human level.
Cuz, if you're just saying that he sucks as a person without having done that, it would mean you're a very sad and judgmental person who should spend much less time worrying about celebrities.
So its a good thing you got to know him before you said that, otherwise it is you who would suck.

Wait, people actually still listen to actual radios?
Please read post #162 above (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=12421810&postcount=162), for a definition of "radio controls" that is different from what you thought.

I'd love to have a trackpad but I do really like the Magic Mouse. It's not super ergonomic, of course, but I like it more than most other traditional mice.
I know a lot of people that like them. That's cool. But it's not ergonomic at all. Not even a little. The only Apple mouse I ever liked (loved actually) was the ADB II. In my opinion, it's the last and only good mouse Apple ever made.
