Metric system should be in the U.S.. No point in keeping an odd system.

For manufacturing, my impression is that the U.S. does use metric. Maybe that is because most stuff is manufactured overseas or for something like automobiles, they are marketed worldwide.:o However for living around town, I like my miles, inches, gallons, and pounds.

Putting it on the Mac App Store raises an interesting issue about licencing - they said that purchases could be used on any Mac that you use.

That opens them up to a lot of abuse.

    How so?

The current method is "the OS DVD you buy can be used anywhere, as often as you like, forever."

How could it be worse than that?

I've always thought the tablet PC was cool tech in search of a practical application to take off in popularity.
Using a tablet as remote for your iTV media center? check
Using a tablet to wirelessly surf the web/email? check
Using a tablet as portable music and video player? check

With the right specs and price, Apple could pull this off.

Using a tablet to wirelessly open the curtains? check!

Seriously I'm visualising a home digital interface perhaps replacing the Mac mini in the range. With flash hard drive, rechargeable battery and with a 8" screen. A user might sync it with their main Mac or add a larger display, keyboard and mouse and use it alone.

Answer the iPod phone with it and iChat whilst sat on the sofa watching iTV and playing with the the iCurtains - brilliant!

We shouldn't underestimate what progress will be made on voice entry and touch screens - way beyond what we already know!

Yes, I think this rumor has legs! It's 12" PB meets Mac mini meets past attempts at tablets meets all those who wanted more useable PDA!

+1. My IP is being logged right now most likely. No matter where you go, using any communication device, you can be tracked. If you're that paranoid, get off the grid. Every phone company tracks your location. This for iPhone users is just a log of it on your phone.

I do agree, however, that the consolidated.db file should at least be encrypted if it is to remain on the device. Now any good crook knows all they need is your iphone to find out when best to rob you.

Exactly. I don't know why everybody is all fired up about this. If you aren't a criminal, you have nothing to worry about. If you are, then you are probably bright enough to use a burn phone. :p

As a photo geek I would have to disagree with you here. I don't believe myself that the lens quality for something so small would be good enough, and I especially don't believe that the sensors @ 5mp that small would be up to it. You'd have ridiculous amounts of noise in almost any photo, and optical aberrations would be easily picked up. Pixel density would be incredible. They have trouble getting good performance out of 6mp sensors that are several times as large as the one that would be here, and lenses on those same point and shoot digital cameras often will show massive amounts of chromatic aberrations particularly around strong light sources and highlight-shadow transitions even with lenses that are many many times larger.

You would also probably not have a real zoom.

This is all speculation on my part, but based on the price points of the best point and shoots, to get decent performance out of a cell camera that small and with that much resolution, you'd have to pay a huge price tag.

Given the quality (sic) of iSight, I'm not sure that Apple is going to make a camera phone that will satisfy you. Come back in 30 years and we'll see.

This (http://switchtoamac.com/site/apple-will-soon-announce-a-macbook-pro-revison-heres-why.html) an a good read on why we may see a MacBook Pro revision very soon.

    Makes sense to me

Nice explanation with evidence on current and past updates. I'm now convinced that there will be a MacBook Pro update this year. Photokina sounds like the ideal venue.

Yah CIA, I think you'd be surprised with what little you can get by on these days in smaller boxes and with Thunderbolt.

And I agree with you, I hate tapes...lol. I wish we would go to 1 damn standard but we know that is how people make their money...no standards. I'm so sick of all the formats and all the output formats. I just want 1080p and that's it. Burn the rest. ;)

Ya, you know what, it is OLD and Slow, and Legacy. Because that's what small (under 20) staff TV stations usually have. We're not WNBC, we are a small town TV station that is held together by ducktape and fishing wire. I would LOVE a brand new station with cutting edge equipment, but that's just not in the cards when we are fighting to stay above water. So we use what we have available and it works. I didn't buy that whole setup all at once. (yes, it's my PERSONAL setup, since when started I refused to use the PC based Avid system.) It was pieced together over the last few years as we slimmed staff over the recession and sold off Avid machines to buy new macs. Thunderbolt is awesome, but right now it's 1998 all over again, when my first DV deck and Premiere running B&W G3 system cost $10,000 put together. Is there a single SHIPPING thunderbolt device yet? No, and the first few that do ship will cost a zillion dollars that we don't have. I love the promise of thunderbolt, but I'm more excited for 2014 thunderbolt when devices are cheap and plentiful. Right now hard drives are cheap, tape is cheap, and legacy firewire cases are all over the place. It's old, legacy, but here and essentially free. If I was swimming in cash it would be a different story.

So for the moment I'd prefer a single big box that does the job of many less expensive boxes that add up in cost to more then the one box. I need a box that I can add to over the years since buying new $2,000 machines every year is out of the question. Our Edit bay is 2 Mac Pro's, and a pair of 27" 2.93 iMac i7's. A G4 for Cold Storage, and a G5 for when interns need to learn the basics of Final Cut. (also a few OLD HP Avid Workstations from 2003 or 2004.)

What does that have to do with anything?

Even if this was somehow relevant …

You're the one who is always talking about the financial cost and economic return, as though it's all about money. I was just having a bit of fun with that topic. Don't take it too seriously. :)

Not with their reasoning. My scientific literacy is pretty good, and I don't have an inherent mistrust of science which many Americans do.

Gosh, then you won't be able to plead ignorance on judgement day!

I don't doubt scientists when they advocate for the metric system, in science. Howeve, since most of the advantages of the metric system are really reserved to the sciences, the question of whether or not everything in life should be metric really isn't a scientific one; it's an economic and convenience one. In my daily life I do not need to easily convert between the mass of water and its volume or take temperatures relative to the boiling point of water.

So you're saying that science has nothing to do with everyday life? Cake for the elite and bread for everyone else??

I see no good sense in that. If the metric system was intrinsically difficult to use in everyday life, then maybe you would have a point. But it's not — it's actually much, much easier to use once you learn it.

You say that you have no need for it in your personal life… but you know, I think you'd find it's a bit like an iPhone in that respect. I kept my old Nokia 5110 phone well past its use-by date because I honestly didn't have a need for anything beyond making and receiving phone calls. When the iPhone came out in Australia, I snapped one up because I wanted to have one less gadget in my pocket (iPod and phone) and now I don't know how I did without all those incredibly useful apps. The metric system, as many people here keep pointing out, enables some pretty easy mental arithmetic. You'd use it if you had it.

No, but that doesn't mean that we should transition now either. It all depends on the ease of transition. This is why I think long term transitioning is the only real option available. Do things piecemeal in order of greatest economic return, and if there is no economic return on a particular item, forget it. There's no point in switching to something that is going only cost money; at some point there needs to be a positive return for it to make sense.

You say it's about the 'ease of transition' but in the next breath you argue that it's all about 'economic return'. Personally I think you're clutching at straws to defend the fact that your country is behind the rest of the world in its ability to institute any kind of consistency with its system of measurements. But, we can agree to disagree.

The upgrade timing of ipad2 caught the key competitors by surprise. They had designs based on ipad. the dual core processor was an easy one to anticipate, but the dual chip GPU with the unexpected graphics performance boost via the Power VR SGX 543M2 with double the memory and other technical goodies makes the iPad2 a first class upgrade. As the software developments come along ... I would expect this design to certainly carry well into next year. There is no way Retina is feasible and a quad core is just way out. A lot more "I want" than practical in a business sense. Hardware always comes first, then the software. The apps developers are just getting started with this new stuff... and the rumor (which is all it is) that iPad3 will be here is 6 months just is pure foolishness. But the media hype just keeps chewing this idea ... Give it a rest... how about some realism. The gaming performance and the interfacing with the big Screen TV is much more likely to grow very rapidly... it is already beginning to show.

So if I want a mid-range tower, I can configured it to have less RAM, a smaller HD and a completely useless graphics card, and still come in $200-300 more than a comparable machine from Dell/Gateway/etc.? Why can't Apple sell me a desktop with 2GB RAM stock and a 250GB HD for less than two grand?

Yes, the Apple is a quad instead of a dual - but exactly which apps does that matter on? Is a quad really going to be a vast improvement for Photoshop through Rosetta over, say, a single Xeon or 2.4 Conroe?

We'll have to wait for some benchmarks, but I'm willing to bet that Photoshop even under Rosetta will be phenomenal.

All I ask for is a moderately priced OS X desktop that isn't crippled in any way (still paying for 802.11g! $350 to get a usable graphics card!).

Some people may not use wireless, this stamps down on prices. As for the graphics card, you have to realize not all professionals need a super-duper chip. Lots of professional apps are more processor intensive then anything.

SO in the Paris expo is where we'll most likely see updated MBP?

Yes, highly likely. Probably along with the Mac Mini, MacBook, iMac and iPod.

Yeah, but it's also the only way to get a 7200 rpm hard drive. I've read things about the hard drives not being user replaceable. Now I've taken apart several old Thinkpads and replaced motherboards and even the screens, but there warranties were up. I don't feel like voiding the warranty on my Mac.

I also think that this return policy is rather asinine. As another user stated, there are only 3 options to customize. Dell machines are highly configurable and they will refund you (minus 15% restocking fee though).

Unfortunately, that's just the way it is with apple, and it's despicable.

I'm hoping with the next MBP update, they also tweak the enclosure to allow for an easily swappable HDD, like the macbook. It simply isn't fair that a lower end model gets a great feature like that and the higher end gets screwed. I would be sorely disappointed if this did not happen with the update.

Because of return policy issues, I will probably go ahead and get the 5400rpm drive. It seems like much less hassle to stay away from BTO systems if something goes wrong.

I'm really tired of the common 'wisdom' that looks at current phone-only numbers (dominated by Android 2-fers) and declare the inevitable, eternal dominance of Android, particularly in light of articles like this...
    http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/4/Apple_iOS_Platform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S

That's 59% iOS over Android when you count the whole platform. (That's 59% MORE, not 59 apple, 41% android).
That's a single iOS ecosystem that includes THE platform of the future (the only 'finished' tablet currently available), compared to an Android environment that's fragmented even in phones, and completely disjointed with its beta (of course) tablet platform (fresh out of the oven, no muss, no testing.)

Just as the media pumps up the underdog in a political race to sell more ad minutes (no one wants a boring horse race), Apple MUST be taken down a notch if there are going to be page hits.

My money is where it counts... on AAPL.

According to the latest data, Android now edges out iOS, 31% to 30%, a significant change from the July-September 2010 period when iOS held a 33%-26% lead over Android among future smartphone purchasers.
The difference is most like not significant enough to say that Android edges out iOS. What's most likely is significant enough is Android's rise and iOS losing share.

Once again, the seperating into 'smartphone' and 'tablet' markets makes little sense. A tablet is a lot more like a laptop than a smartphone. The survey is about smartphones. The iPad isn't a smartphone, nor is the iPod Touch. It's about more than just the OS. If Microsoft decided to run Windows 7 on their smartphones, then their desktop computers, laptops, or tablets wouldn't be counted either.

    edit:

Apple isn't forced to allow iOS only on their own devices.

    WTF ???!!!

Access to Your Account and Content

You acknowledge and agree that Apple may access, use, preserve and/or disclose your account information and Content if legally required to do so or if we have a good faith belief that such access, use, disclosure, or preservation is reasonably necessary to: (a) comply with legal process or request; (b) enforce these TOS, including investigation of any potential violation thereof; (c) detect, prevent or otherwise address security, fraud or technical issues; or (d) protect the rights, property or safety of Apple, its users or the public as required or pemitted by law.

    http://www.apple.com/legal/mobileme/en/terms.html

Apple and Amazon have similar statement in their TOS when it comes to cloud storage. In fact they're so similar I wouldn't be surprised if they both used the same legal team to write their TOS.

There goes Amazon copying Apple again!
