Can't say I've been excited by new OSes since Panther/Tiger. Yay it's more iOS-like and we get an app store.
*yawn*
I gotta agree. Something about going with IOS as a touchy-feely just doesn't rub me right. There are improvements that I really welcome - but I don't think using an Mac App Store for application deployment is required. The Restore feature is just Time Machine augmented in my narrow mind.
So what part of 'iOS' fluff do Versions, Air Drop, Mission Control, Auto Save and Lion Server fit under?
'Useful' UI improvements? So what would you consider useful? Personally full screen apps, a native application launcher that can be organized, and resume are all useful to me. Get out of the mindset that just because it originated from iOS means that it won't be useful.
I'd like for you to explain how iOS implementations as a UI are actually useful to the desktop OS?
- Keep in mind that drawing characters on the Trackpad is already in Snow Leopard; Auto Save/Restore like I said is just Time Machine in a different direction, Mission Control is a Task Manager for Expose (I feel its the WRONG direction really; this is not a classic smartphone), and Lion Server seems to be more a "home server" with features stripped or missing.
Many things are STILL not known and until we all try them out in full production use means we ALL have a mindset that is not up to par of what Apple believes can benefit us all.
Either way we have another 10 more years with OS X; or the technologies it offers - Steve Jobs OS X Introduction.

what are the apple guys gonna' do with the mac mini! Im in the market for one w/edu discount! I'm waiting boys! What processors would you think the mac mini will adopt? End of core solo?
I think the mini is the worst performing machine they have on the market [it does use the slowest processors]. I am expecting an accross the board upgrade [MB, MBP, iMac, mini]. At the very least, higher end Yonas in the mini. I can also see Apple making the mini a BTO model like the MBP. That really simplifies the order process for the customer.

Silly people. No one OWNS an iPhone. They own the right to use the iPhone. Welcome to the new world where buying a product does not mean that you can do what you want with it. You can only do what the manufacturers say you can do with it.

What rock are you living under?? A 5mb file is high end? Haha Why do you think the RIAA & MPAA are scared? It's soooooo easy to download music & movies illegally. Or look at YouTube, god knows how many 10mb videos are downloaded each second.
I haven't done ripping in a while, but decent encoding was about about 1Mb per minute for music, and the goal for a feature length movie was about 650Mb (The size of a CD ;)). Maybe they have gotten better, but you do realize a DVD is like 4.5Gb and it already is a lossy format?
650Mb movies are tolarable on a TV, but not a HD TV in my opinion. The few movies I did encode down, I was happy with 250Mb feature length movies at 320x200. Yes, I've been under a rock, but only for a couple years.

The rack mount format is just for that: to mount in a standard 19" rack, along with other equipment and even a rack-mount UPS. That's not the realm of a Mac Pro. It's the realm of servers. I like the current, and brilliant, case design very much. It's an example of form follows function and great industrial design.

Loras, still with the confidence of the party behind him, declared that they would continue into the next room.
The torch cast a soft light across the stone floor, but no features were immediately apparent. As they began to walk in, the group heard a sick sucking sound followed by a rhythmic rasping.
"Stay close" Rosius said confidently, his eyes trying to pierce the darkness the torch would not. The group edged forward as the adventurers drew their swords with the couple bringing up the rear.
A leg suddenly appeared at the edge of the torchlight as something scurried past. The adventurers fanned out and formed a semi-circle about the party as they prepared to meet their foe. They could hear the creature scurrying about, apparently coming from all directions. "Steady, he's just testing our defense," Rhon confidently declared.
Then, it brushed Wilmer. He quickly did a 180 and tried to follow the shadow as it ran out of sight. Emboldened, he charged into the darkness in the direction he thought the creature went.
"Wilmer, NO!" Loras charged forward in an attempt to cast the torchlight on his charging comrade. The group then heard the clang of steel on stone behind them punctuated by grunts and screeches. It ended with a heavy thud and a deep sigh.
The party whirled around and hurried forward to the sound. There, they found Wilmer's lifeless body.
"Oh god, what did it!" Beatrice was on the verge of screeching as she struggled to keep her voice from breaking. Rosius stepped forward, took the torch from Loras wordlessly, and inspected the corpse.
He stood back up, turned and handed the torch back to Loras. The collective gaze on him asked the question for them. He was dead.
Rhon stole the torch and charged into the darkness, leaving the remaining heroes. They saw him meet his opponent and kill it with a single swing of the sword, beheading it.
He returned with its head and threw it at their feet, spitting on it as it stopped rolling. "Goblin."
Wilmer (appleguy123) has died. It is now the villain's turn. All the surviving heroes have leveled up.

The answer is 288.
Back to 7th grade Math: Order of operations= PEMDAS
Parentheses first 9+3=12
Then division 48/2=24 because 24X2 is 48. Multiplication and division go together.
Then multiplication because they are next to each other. 24(12)=288

Quite true, I'm pretty sure it was. But at least it's possible somehow.
I don't see how Apple could get away with not having a way to make an install backup. The recovery partition is not good enough. It's a fact of life that hard drives die.
Not to mention why would I want to waste space on a recovery partition anyhow ? ;)
I do hope Apple gets a clue from how the different Linux/BSD distributions have been doing it. Just give us something to make our own installation media as a download, not some glorified app installer.
If they do, great, if they don't, I'll buy a physical copy.

No one forces you now. I was talking in terms of future limitations. I was also speaking in the abstract, meaning any company to offer a service of this nature will "probably" impose some sort of restrictions to gouge money from the consumer. Again, speaking in future terms. Otherwise, what is the point of building some grand service if it has no advantage economically? Companies are out to make money.

You seem really hung up on the fact that if Lion is sold on the app store it has to act exactly like every thing else on the app store, when that doesn't necessarily have to be the case.
I'm only "hung up" on that because that's what everything points to right now.
The current betas of Lion are simply DMGs with install files.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
I remember when Napster and Rio laughed at the iPod and iTunes, and 5 years later.
The difference? For all intents and purposes the iPhone is a toy. phone + music. there is nothing wrong with catering to the average consumer. But the simple fact is businesses will not give it even a half second thought before they move on. Yes admittedly we have yet to see the final specs and features but without a touch screen and without a thumb keyboard the business world will pat Apple on the head, tell them that "awww isn't that cute", and walk away. Its not a business tool its a consumer product. A product that will sell like mad in traditional phone vs. iPhone markets but Blackberrry/Treo vs. iPhone? Not a chance in [bleep].
PS- That being said I WANT to be proven wrong. I want Apple to provide an expierence that covers music\contacts\calendar\todo\e-mail all in one sexy device but watching Apple over the years I've lost faith they they will try anything daring. Anything that really does take on the big guys. I'm willing to bet that whatever is released will be music\phone and if you are REALLY lucky limited calendar\contacts with no way to imput info. Prove me wrong Apple. Please.

What is the point in this?
For a phone and an iPad which has fixed resolution graphics, yes fine, but on a computer desktop which just scales to whatever resolution you have?
I don't get it?
Sure, yes, increase the resolution, but why not increase it to an industry standard instead?
We have 1920x1080 for many widescreen monitors these days.
We also have 1920x1200 for a bit more height.
In the future we will be moving to 4K resolutions for video & computer graphics.

Then one day we can dream about 8K ;)

And with the patriot act the telecos let the government move in and access data without warrants. Yet everyone seems fine with this. However, the instant your phone has a database of cell phone towers it is something nefarious. Sigh. It really would be nice if the real privacy concerns were addressed and not this low hanging fruit of a cache on your phone.
Agreed. Google's darling Android doesn't just track cell towers. They've found it recording wi-fi networks near the user as well and transmitting that data... like every couple of minutes. (No wonder the batteries don't last on droid for more than 3-5 hours). I wish I could find the link to the article I read that in. It's certain models that have been found to do it.... right down to your GPS coordinates. Why does Google need to know this? And their users are now inadvertently spying on other people. Google has no rights to info on my wi-fi network just because someone drove past my house with an Android phone in the car.
Yet I use Google every day, but I at least know they're watching me.

Whats the normal run of events?
3 split up segments and then one more thing
Here is what i reckon
1) Intel transition
blah blah blah, it has been quick, painless developers, developers developers. Everyone has been receptive except $#%#@@! Adobe
Intel keep giving us the chips
today we update MBP and iMac to core 2 duo
2)Talking about tranistion there are 2 products which haven't yet been transistioned
PowerMac > Mac Pro
Xserve > Xserve? Mac Serve?
Mac Pro has 3 configs
Best - Dual Xeon, 1GB 500GB 256X1800 $3299
Better - Core 2 Duo 2.93ghz 1GB 500gb 256mb X1600 $2499
Good - Core 2 Duo 2.6 1GB 250gb 256mb X1600 $1999
Xserves - All Xeons, dah
3) Leopard talk
4) One more thing
Candidates: iPhone, iPod, New Screens (may be intro'd with Mac Pro's) what ever else there could be
Mostly agree with you... except I'm thinking x1900GT/XT for the high end... possibly even a FIREGL V5200 (V7200 option?) - after all, these are pro WORKSTATIONS, not desktops. One year ago I would have completely agreed with you (Apple's usual "conservative" GPU choices) - I think times have changed...we'll see:)
Oh, and just because these products don't exist for the MAC market today doesn't mean they won't starting tomorrow... I also wouldn't discount seeing the nVidia 7600GT and 7900 GT (or even a quadro fx 1500 option w/ OSX drivers) make an appearance in place of the ATI cards...

At last, why 26th-30th? Why would Apple have a large event where it would be appropriate to release MBP's, and then instead announce 1-4 days after? I believe it might be a few days prior to Photokina, as the iMac was before the Paris Expo.;)
As I've postulated in other threads, this is why I believe the 19th is still quite viable for a MBP update release. Apple may be starting a precedent by releasing updated hardware before an event featuring announcements that will benefit greatly on those new updated systems.

Ok, that makes sense. I guess Conroe is the only Core 2 Duo chip that's available today. (And Woodcrest but it's marketed as Xeon 5100)
Merom is also availible today.
They have been shipping them for a few weeks now. Even a a few weeks before they were introduced. Intel just says that they won't show up on the market until the end of August.
I think Apple could have their out before that. If the rumors are ture, they just have to replace the Merom chip in the assembly line in place of Yonah. They already have the computers built (more or less).
