"C2D laptop information has come to a near stop"

Based on all of our POOR experience it is obvious that little real information on the Merom based MBP exists. I do not want to admit to all of the time I have wasted on this decision / upgrade. A new notebook is needed within a week - I can not bring myself to by a Yonah since I've waited this long - but............

    Now - the next Tuesday (hahahahahahahahahaha) - 9/12 - then what:mad:

Crime doesn't pay, scumbag. Glad the guard wasn't hurt over these losers trying to smash and grab their way to to a quick payday.

To everyone condemning the guard for DOING HIS JOB, make sure you read the article, and know the facts before doing so. If someone is shooting at me, you better bet that I'll be shooting to kill. Kudos to him; hopefully he isn't too mentally shaken up to continue living a normal life.

With all the programming and money toward the Sony owned rights, etc., the tech isn't worth it in a computer except to a small percentage.
I agree. Blu-ray is nice, but on a computer, even a 27" iMac, it's not reaching it's full potential, IMO. Besides, you can always input your PS3 to your iMac if necessary.

You are also stuck in current times. Physical media will be dead by then, everything is going to be cloud based, there will be no such thing as a physical copy of movies any more :)
What kind of media do you expect that "cloud" to store data with? Your statement delves into the realm of privacy concern.

I think the fact that Microsoft is spending so much money to fight the trademark so they can use it rather than just coming up with their own name (after all that would be much cheaper) says they don't think it's generic.

If it was generic, the name wouldn't have so much marketing power that Microsoft is willing to spend this much money so they can use it too... Microsoft obviously feels that the marketing power of being able to use that name will draw enough users in to make up for the money they are paying to fight Apple claiming no one else can use it. Otherwise, they'd feel it was not worth all that money to spend rather than just getting one of their employees to come up with a name or even a simple contest amongst employees (or even the public) with a reward (That most likely would be cheaper than the lawyers) for who picks the winning name.

The fact that MS is willing to spend all this money alone says that the name is not generic.

    Awesome!

Why 2 negatives over 1 positive? Wow.

Is there a way you can upgrade this new chip on previous intel mac? Just wondering. This is new to me.

No, but when Merom comes out (the laptop version of Conroe/Core 2 Duo), you can upgrade the iMac to that.

Conroe and Merom are 64-bit, right?

I know what you mean, and I agree, but Apple has had to work to a pretty tight schedule. I doubt they've had time to redesign the iMac from scratch. Merom will be pretty good performance wise.... especially near the top end. The heat contraints of the iMac might infact force Apple to go the "mobile" route. The Conroes might be good, but they still produce a fair amount of heat.

I'm hoping they'll plonk a bog standard Intel mobo into a nice pretty box and stick the Apple logo on the side for a Conroe based "MacPC".

I'm really hoping for a Conroe iMac. It's not a huge redesign, they'll just need a motherboard of the same form factor with a different socket.

Because they use the same battery, how can videos play longer and not music?

Either the video playback code was improved to be less power hungry (maybe it uses less CPU, maybe it doesn't need to spin the disk as much), or an improved video chip was put in which uses less power.

A little-known company, and that was to create it's product. If apple buys one of their largest competitors, that will raise a few eyebrows.
Think Microsoft strategy here. They settle with Creative for $100 million and Creative join the Made for iPod scheme. If they suceed and get back on their feet, it helps Apple argue they aren't anti-competition, if they fail, Creative fall by the wayside and Apple could perhpas snap them up for a bargain.

Buy Creative now and thy will not only be accused of anti-competitive behaviour, but probably lose any cases over Fairplay.

    Actually October 19, 2005 for the 970MP.

the original quote was to "G5/PPC fanboys," not "970MP fanboys." But whatever. My point is that it's hardly surprising that a bleeding edge chip beats an old one. That's kinda the point of technological progress, no?

Now u see why Steve wet his pants when he saw these chips over a year ago. Then Decided to switch , He knew if he had not. Apple's platform would be dead in the water.

So then AMD and IBM are dead in the water? Somebody better call them and tell them.

Believe it or not, the fact that intel is releasing new chips does not mean that the other companies have given up or that intel has "won." IBM's desktop and server chips have been and will continue to be very competitive. Apple switched because PPC was not cutting it for laptops.

Does anything use Thunderbolt yet? Will anything ever?
I've heard about stuff from Pegasus (storage), Promise (storage), Matrox (video), LaCie (storage).

Especially Thunderbolt-connected RAID storage quickly popped up.

And I have no trouble imagining why that would be interesting, haha.

There's no question that apple will not *ship* merom machines tomorrow. But there's nothing stopping them from making the announcement and taking preorders.

ah yes. just like they did with the eMac back in the day. that was popular... you know, not having a product to ship for weeks.

USB3 is dead tech. You'll never see it on a Mac.

USB 3 is coming next year. The only reason Apple has yet to implement it is because Intel hasn't. But that will change in Ivy Bridge.

A pair of security researchers today announced (http://radar.oreilly.com/2011/04/apple-location-tracking.html) that they are sounding the privacy warning bell about the capability of iOS 4 to track the location of an iPhone or iPad on an ongoing basis, storing the data to a hidden file known as "consolidated.db" in the form of latitude and longitude and a timestamp for each point. All iPhones appear to log your location to a file called "consolidated.db." This contains latitude-longitude coordinates along with a timestamp. The coordinates aren't always exact, but they are pretty detailed. There can be tens of thousands of data points in this file, and it appears the collection started with iOS 4, so there's typically around a year's worth of information at this point. Our best guess is that the location is determined by cell-tower triangulation, and the timing of the recording is erratic, with a widely varying frequency of updates that may be triggered by traveling between cells or activity on the phone itself. While the consolidated.db file has been known for some time and has played a key role in forensic investigations of iOS devices by law enforcement agencies, the researchers note the data is available on the devices themselves and in backups in unencrypted and unprotected form, leading to significant privacy concerns. Once gathered, the data is saved in backups, restored to devices if necessary, and even migrated across devices, offering a lengthy history of a user's movement.

Should be public anyway, why can't we have cool 3rd party devices?

The AirPlay private key wasn't made public by Apple for the same reason the FairPlay private key wasn't-- having the private key essentially gives you access to an unencrypted stream of whatever content is encrypted by AirPlay.

This is total BS. We should have been informed of this and a way to turn it off or delete the file on our own. As for the poster above who stated it only goes to your computer, I highly doubt it. This is another big brother tracking honest citizens. Hope a class action does happen. I will definitely sign on!

You need to get off the grid dude. Get rid of it all. Just disappear. Don't even write your name in your underwear. Get a fake ID under the name Topsy Krets.

It's certainly better than an red, glossy 1G nano - hopefully it would have the proper matte, anodised finish of the current nanos rather than the glossy coating ColorWarePC use to do their custom iPods.

    Not too bad though...

Yes, but to the average consumer. These things aren't very important. They will be looking at Ghz, and Apple's "X times faster" looks at the processor. That is what Apple is marketing, not FSB.

Yup, I know Apple's marketing loves to be ridiculous. :p 95% of customers* wouldn't notice the difference. I'm one of the 5% who will notice it but its not like I'm buying one, my iMac G5 will keep me happy for another 2+ years.

    Where did anyone say that?

I thought that cover had photos of the Beatles on it?

And red or green, their logo still looks nothing like the Apple Computer logo.

The logo on the center of the record, not the album artwork. The Beatle's logo looks like an apple to me, Apple's logo looks like an apple to me. We both know if the sides were reversed, Apple would have filed a suit.
